Ladybugs
Every spring we release nearly 35,000 ladybugs across our farm in an effort to keep our trees healthy and avoid unnecessary pesticides. These ladybugs, not to be confused with Asian Beetles, feed on Aphides and Spider Mites. By releasing a large number of ladybugs, we are reducing the risk of having any harmful bugs invade our fields because ladybugs eat the smaller bugs that cause damage to the trees.
How do we get 35,000 ladybugs?
The ladybugs arrive in the mail from California packaged in a mesh breathable bag. It’s very important to release the ladybugs at dusk by carefully placing them into the branches of the evergreens. In order to keep them calm, it is recommended to spray a 50/50 concentrate of water and 7-Up so they are not hungry and searching for food when you open the bag. Once released, if they find enough food, they will quickly settle into their new home!
In the past 5 years, our family has grown a great appreciation for these tiny, beautiful ladybugs and we will continue to welcome them at our farm!
